Quick Thoughts on the USWNT 2025 Roster
Here’s my quick thoughts on the USWNT Roster for 2025:
The Size
There are 37 players named to this “roster”. I put “roster” in quotes because this isn't exactly a roster, but more of a training squad. Before each tour/tournament, the coaching staff names a separate roster for that specific event. Most of the time those players are pulled from the USWNT, in rare occasions they are not.
With the lack of post-collegiate hockey in America, it makes sense to try to have as many players as possible at training camps and stay within the USAFH system.
The Youngster
We now have a 15-year-old on the USWNT, Reese D’Ariano. We know that she had been to some training with the team back in December due to Instagram posts, so it is not a surprise that she was named to this roster.
D’Ariano is one of the best players in the country at the moment, even at such a young age. She currently plays in the Netherlands part-time with AH&BC and has been on the US Indoor National Team for 2 World Cups.
She’ll only be 19 for the next Olympics, but she will be a player to watch in this cycle as she has a promising future ahead.
The New Players
The newcomers to the team are Lucy Adams (Brown University), Jans Croon (UVA), Reese D’Ariano, Daniela Mendez-Trendler (formally UVA, now UNC), Mia Schoenbeck (Wake Forest), and Makenna Webster (Ohio State).
Adams stood out to us during the recent New Zealand games, having lots of time on the ball. Brown is not typically a school that has alumni on the National Team, but Adams faired well in the test matches.
Schoenbeck and Croon are both defenders, which was our oldest line coming out of the last Olympic cycle. While we have not had any defenders announce their retirements yet, it is good to see more defenders being added to the system.
Mendez-Trendler was a standout at UVA and is now transferring to UNC where she’ll get more acquainted with Dixon and Heck as teammates.
Last (and most exciting to us) is Makenna Webster. Webster was not in the New Zealand matches, as she was playing for Ohio State’s Ice Hockey Team. A dual-sport athlete, Webster is dynamic in the midfield and is such a fun player to watch. We hope to see her in a Team USA Jersey soon.
The Missing Players
We had a few retirements over the fall, with Danielle Grega, Linnea Gonzalez, and Brooke DeBerdine all announcing their retirements.
Other than those three athletes, the only player we noted as missing from this roster was Karlie Kisha. Kisha was training with the squad in December, there has been no announcement regarding her future with the team.
From the New Zealand tour roster, Carter Ayars is the only player who was not named to this roster. Ayars is currently a PhD student in England which may be the reason for this (this is purely speculation, we do not have a confirmed reason).
Let us know what your thoughts on this roster are!
