House v Grant FINALLY Approved
Sorry for the late-night news, but apparently the news never sleeps!
Judge Wilkens has officially approved the House v NCAA Settlement, allowing college athletes to be directly paid by their institutions.
The settlement will offer $2.8 billion in damages and allow D1 schools to offer up to $20.5 million to current players. Of course, most field hockey players will only see a small sliver of this money. The ruling states that schools must offer money to all sports; however, that money does not need to be equitable.
There will now be a NIL clearinghouse to check if the deals are “fair-market value” instead of being a pay-for-play model. This clearinghouse will be run by Deloitte.
The ruling does call for the implementation of roster caps, which for field hockey is 27 athletes. Due to many objections, athletes on current rosters are guaranteed not to lose their roster spots, and players who have lost their roster spots already are allowed to be offered their spots back. Schools have 30 days to submit a list of student-athletes who are exempt from the roster limits.
More developments (and lawsuits) are guaranteed to come out over the next few days and weeks, and we will update you as soon as more information is available.
